2018 hasn’t come quietly. Designers and brands expect home decor to be bolder than years before, with rich colour palettes, luxe velvet, concrete accents, brass decor, floral prints, and Wabi-Sabi.
Here’s what’s hot and happening this year:
Richer Colour Palettes
Though muted colours can help you avoid making spaces feel overwhelming, richer hues throughout your home can make your more muted furnishings and decorative decor pop. Don’t be afraid to add some interesting colour to your living space; we’re talking dramatic reds, statement pinks, bold yellows, and organic greens. Now is the time to be brave with your colour choices – on both walls and furniture pieces.
Brass Decor
Move over, rose gold... Brass is here to stay for 2018. This is the year where we wave goodbye to stainless steel and polished nickel, and welcome brass accents back into our homes – it’s a surprisingly warm and subtle alternative to the expected steel accents. Brass is the most sophisticated and organic of the metallic colour palette. Lamps and smaller accessories are the perfect way to inject this trend into a room without having to invest in larger, more expensive furniture pieces.
Floral Patterns
Florals are making a comeback in a big way, and with their comfortable familiarity, eye-catching detail, and vintage vibes they will fit right in with 2018’s nod to nostalgia. But these are not the florals you’d find on your grandmother’s curtains, these are dramatic and stylised. They are abstract and bold and are often outlined in black. Forget waiting for spring – these will be hot all year round.
Concrete Accents
2017 was the year of sleek minimalistic spaces, 2018 swings the pendulum back to the other extreme. Some may wonder why concrete has left the construction zone, but concrete is the hottest new decor trend (that’s a little rough around the edges). It’s a bold look that can work for a range of different home and living decor styles and will give your interior a strong statement. It’s also incredibly versatile as you can go for the full industrial look or get high contrast with soft furnishings.
Luxe Velvet
Velvet is taking over (and we’re not mad). Velvet is a lush, delicious kind of hug, yet it’s also very luxurious – and the concept of luxury is very big now. There’s such unrest now, and when we get home, we want to line our lives in velvet. Though it might have once been considered old-fashioned or fussy, a new bohemian age of design has claimed it for its own. This multi-dimensional fabric already started gaining a lot of attention in 2017, resulting in velvet decor being one of this year’s most sought-after trends. If you're at all hesitant to get your velvet on, we say start small with an accent, like throw pillows or a pouf. Now, are you ready for the plush life?
Wabi-Sabi
Wabi-Sabi could easily be the number 1 home decor trend this year. It is the Japanese art of appreciating the beauty in the naturally imperfect world. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete". No matter your personal style, there is one key factor to nailing this trend for your home design: Find the beauty in the not-so-perfect. Accept that your home doesn’t always have to look showroom-ready. But, how can this be achieved? Try using handmade pottery as accents, styling in odd numbers, avoiding symmetry, and layer your linen sheets (great for the people who hate making their beds).
Now you’re ready to decorate your home! Which of these home decor trends make your heart skip a beat?
